Many drivers are told that battery powered cars need “almost no servicing”. While there are fewer moving parts than in petrol or diesel models, skipping checks altogether is a poor idea. A realistic view of service intervals helps keep costs predictable and your car reliable.

This guide explains which items typically need attention, how often they are checked, and how to work with your service provider without paying for work you do not need. Always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations first.

How EV service schedules differ from petrol and diesel cars

Traditional service plans focus on engine oil, filters and timing belts. Electric models remove most of that, so official schedules often look shorter or less frequent. That does not mean the car can be ignored between software updates.

EV service plans tend to emphasise safety checks, brake components, suspension, battery condition and cooling. Many brands also include system diagnostics at each visit, since a lot of issues show up as stored fault codes rather than obvious mechanical noise.

Typical time and distance intervals to expect

Most manufacturers use a time based rule (for example, once a year or every two years) combined with a distance limit. If you drive very little, the time limit usually triggers first to ensure items like brake fluid and filters are not forgotten.

Some models have condition based servicing that relies on onboard monitoring. The car may alert you when a check is due. Even in these cases, it is sensible to read the handbook and know the maximum recommended interval in case mileage based reminders are delayed.

Items that usually need regular inspection

Although exact lists differ, several mechanical parts on EVs are similar to those on combustion cars. They still wear out, even if acceleration feels smoother and quieter.

  • Tyres:EVs are often heavier and have strong torque, so tyres can wear faster if pressures are wrong or alignment is out. Regular rotation and pressure checks greatly affect cost.
  • Brakes:Regenerative systems reduce pad wear, but corrosion on discs, sticky calipers and aged brake fluid can still appear. Workshops usually measure pad thickness and inspect discs every visit.
  • Suspension and steering:Bushes, ball joints and shocks still work hard, especially on poor roads. Play or leaks should be checked at routine intervals.
  • Wipers and lights:These are simple but essential items that are usually inspected and replaced as needed during a service.

Fluids and filters in an EV

It is easy to assume that no engine means no fluids. In reality, several important liquids still circulate inside the car and need periodic checks.

  • Brake fluid:Many brands specify replacement every 2 to 3 years because brake fluid absorbs moisture, which can reduce performance.
  • Coolant:The high voltage battery, inverter and onboard charger commonly share a cooling circuit. Change intervals are typically longer, often several years, but leaks or contamination must be addressed quickly.
  • Cabin air filter:This protects the ventilation system and passengers. In polluted or dusty areas it may need replacement more frequently than the schedule suggests.

Some EVs also have reducer or gearbox oil for the drive unit. The manufacturer will specify whether it is “lifetime” or requires changes at certain mileages.

Battery system checks and what they really tell you

Service visits often include a high voltage system inspection. This may involve visual checks of battery casings and cooling lines, as well as electronic diagnostics looking for error codes and insulation faults.

Many owners are interested in battery health reports. These summaries, when offered, usually show remaining capacity compared to when the car was new. They are useful for tracking long term ageing and may be required to support warranty claims.

Skipping recommended checks can affect coverage, especially for general vehicle warranties. Battery warranties often focus on capacity loss and defects, but manufacturers may still expect that scheduled inspections were followed.

Keep copies of invoices and digital records from each visit. If you use an independent workshop, ensure they use compatible parts and fluids and note the mileage and date, so you can show that work aligned with the published schedule.

Choosing where to service your EV

Authorised dealers are usually the safest choice for very new models or complex software related issues, since they have access to official diagnostic tools and campaigns. They are also more likely to know about technical service bulletins and silent recalls.

Independent workshops with EV training can be a cost effective option for routine work like tyres, brakes and suspension. For any high voltage or battery work, it is best to use technicians who are certified for that specific system and who follow local safety regulations.

Preparing for a service and avoiding surprises

Before booking, review the service schedule in your handbook and compare it with the workshop’s quote. Ask for a clear list of what will be done at that visit and which items are optional or based on inspection only.

At drop off, mention any noises, warning messages or changes in charging behaviour you have noticed, even if they come and go. This helps technicians focus their diagnostics and can prevent small concerns from turning into time consuming repairs later.

Owners can safely monitor a few simple items without special tools. Monthly tyre pressure checks, quick visual inspections of tread and lights, and listening for unusual suspension or brake noises are usually enough between formal visits.

For everything related to the high voltage system, charging hardware, coolant leaks or electrical burning smells, it is important to stop using the affected component and contact a qualified professional or your breakdown service.

Balancing cost, safety and long term value

Regular services on an EV are generally less complex than on traditional cars, but they are still an important part of ownership costs. A consistent record can support resale value and reduces the risk of unexpected repairs.

By understanding what each interval includes and why it matters, you can discuss work with confidence, avoid unnecessary extras and keep your car safe and predictable for many years.
