How to check EV battery health when buying a used car

For many drivers, a used EV is the most affordable way to switch away from petrol or diesel. The biggest question usually comes down to one thing: how healthy is the battery.
Battery condition affects range, performance, resale value and repair risk. While you cannot see inside the pack, there are practical steps any shopper can take to understand its real state.
Why battery health matters in a used EV
The traction battery is usually the most valuable component in an EV. Capacity loss over time reduces driving range and can eventually trigger expensive repairs if it becomes severe enough.
Most modern packs degrade slowly, especially if they are managed well and protected by thermal systems. However, usage patterns, climate and fast charging habits can accelerate wear, so two similar cars can age very differently.
Start with the official battery warranty
Begin by checking the original battery warranty from the manufacturer. These are often expressed in years and distance, for example a certain number of years or a fixed mileage for capacity retention above a specific percentage.
Confirm how much of this warranty is left and whether it transfers to the next owner. Check if the warranty covers capacity loss, defects only, or both, and look for exclusions linked to commercial use or previous damage.
Use the in-car battery information wisely
Most EVs display a remaining range estimate and some form of battery indicator, such as capacity bars or a percentage. This data is useful, but it must be interpreted carefully.
Range estimates depend heavily on recent driving style, temperature and accessory use. Battery bar displays can be more reliable, but you should learn how they work for the specific model and what loss of one bar usually represents.
Ask for service history and charging habits
A detailed service history is valuable for any used car, but with an EV it can also hint at battery treatment. Regular maintenance at an authorised or specialist workshop makes it more likely that any software updates or recalls were done.
Politely ask the seller about charging habits: how often they used rapid DC stations, whether the car sat at 100 percent charge for long periods and if it spent time parked in very hot or very cold conditions.
Consider a professional battery health report
Some brands and independent specialists can provide a battery health report that shows estimated state of health as a percentage of original capacity. This may be available through a dealership, a dedicated EV workshop or a third party scan.
If you go this route, ask what tools were used, how state of health is calculated and whether the report includes cell balance or temperature data. Treat the result as one data point rather than an exact measurement.
Do a structured real-world range test

When possible, go beyond a short demonstration drive. A slightly longer route at mixed speeds can tell you a lot. Start with the battery near a known percentage, for example around 80 percent, reset the trip computer and drive normally.
After a set distance, note the new battery percentage and energy consumption. This helps you see whether the displayed range seems realistic and whether consumption is in line with what other owners of the same model usually report.
Watch for warning lights and charging issues
During your test drive, pay attention to any warning messages about the high voltage system, reduced power or limited charging. These can indicate deeper issues that require specialist diagnosis.
Ask to plug the car in, even briefly, to confirm that AC charging starts correctly. If possible, test a DC fast charger as well, since faults can affect one type of charging but not the other.
Inspect for signs of neglect or damage
External condition can also tell a story. A car with obvious accident damage, poor repairs or severe corrosion around underbody areas may have suffered impacts that affected the battery pack or its cooling lines.
Look underneath for heavy scrapes or dents around the central floor area, where many packs are mounted. Any visible damage should trigger a professional inspection and, if serious, may be a good reason to walk away.
Set realistic expectations about capacity loss
No used EV will have a battery that is identical to new. A moderate reduction in capacity is normal and often has limited impact on daily use, especially if you mostly drive short distances and can charge at home or work.
The important question is whether the remaining range comfortably covers your needs in typical weather, with a reasonable buffer. Build that buffer into your decision rather than assuming the rated range is fully available.
When to seek expert help
If you are not confident assessing battery condition, consider paying for an inspection from a workshop that regularly works with EVs. They can read diagnostic codes, review live data and identify early signs of problems.
This costs money, but it can reduce the risk of buying a car with an unhealthy pack. Given the value of the battery, a cautious approach is usually justified, especially with older or high mileage vehicles.
Finally, always verify current warranty terms, inspection options and local market conditions. Battery technology and diagnostic tools evolve quickly, so up-to-date information will help you make a calmer and more informed used EV purchase.
