Many drivers are surprised to learn that some EVs are rated to tow trailers, caravans or small boats. If you are considering an EV and plan to tow, it is important to understand how weight, range and charging access will change your experience.

This guide walks through the main points to check, common pitfalls and simple planning tips so you can decide whether an EV suits your towing plans.

Check the official towing rating, not just online comments

Start with the manufacturer’s specifications. Look for two values: braked towing capacity and unbraked towing capacity. Braked means the trailer has its own brakes, which allows a higher rating. Unbraked limits are usually much lower.

Some EVs have a factory towing package option that increases the rating or adds required hardware, like a stronger hitch or upgraded cooling. If you need to tow close to the maximum weight, that package is usually essential for safety and warranty reasons.

Understand how towing affects range in real life

Towing significantly increases drag and weight, so energy use goes up. How much it rises depends on speed, terrain, trailer size and weather. A tall caravan on the highway usually has a much bigger impact than a low, small utility trailer in town.

Instead of expecting a precise number, think in ranges. Some owners report roughly half their usual range with large, tall trailers at motorway speeds. With lighter or more aerodynamic loads, the impact can be smaller, especially at moderate speeds.

Plan charging with extra margin and more frequent stops

Towing reduces the comfortable distance between charges, so route planning matters more. When mapping a trip, assume more frequent top-ups and avoid running the battery very low, especially in hilly or remote areas where charging options are limited.

Public fast chargers can be tricky with a trailer attached. Many sites are laid out for solo cars only. Check maps or photos in advance and consider using chargers that allow you to park in line with the charger without blocking others.

Trailer shape and weight distribution matter

Weight is not the only issue. A high, boxy trailer creates extra aerodynamic drag, especially at higher speeds. A more streamlined trailer or one that sits low behind the car can reduce energy use and side wind sensitivity.

Balanced loading is critical. Keep heavier items low and close to the trailer axle. Too much weight on the hitch can overload the rear of the vehicle, while too little can cause sway. Always stay within both the vehicle and trailer limits in the owner’s manuals.

Pay attention to payload, not just towing numbers

Every car has a payload limit, which covers passengers, cargo and hitch weight together. With an EV, the battery is heavy, so payload may be lower than you expect compared to a similar size petrol or diesel model.

If you plan to tow with several passengers and gear, check whether the combined payload plus the trailer’s nose weight fits within the EV’s specified limits. Overloading can affect handling, braking distance and legal compliance.

Driving style and speed make a big difference

Gentler acceleration and braking help keep energy use in check and reduce strain on the drivetrain and brakes. Regenerative braking is useful when descending hills, but learn how it behaves with a trailer, as some systems adjust regen for stability.

Speed has a strong effect on range while towing. Reducing speed on highways can noticeably extend distance between charges and make the combination more stable in crosswinds, which is especially important with taller trailers.

Cooling, brakes and stability systems

EVs often manage heat differently from combustion cars, and towing adds extra load. Many models monitor temperatures and may limit power if things get too warm on long climbs or in very hot weather. This is normal protection, but it is worth being aware of for mountain routes.

Modern stability systems can help control trailer sway or wheelspin, but they work best when weight limits are respected and tyres are in good condition. Check tyre pressures on both the car and trailer before any long towing trip.

Practical checks when test driving an EV for towing

If towing is a priority, tell the dealer early and ask what towing equipment is available from the manufacturer. Verify that the tow rating applies to your exact model, battery and drivetrain configuration, not just the model line in general.

During a test drive, pay attention to rear visibility, camera views and how easily you can access charging ports with a hitch in place. Ask how software updates are delivered, since towing related improvements sometimes arrive via updates over time.

Key questions to ask yourself

Before committing, it helps to be honest about how often and how far you really tow. Many people tow only a few weekends a year and do mostly short distances, which is easier to manage than regular, high mileage caravan trips.

Think through: typical trailer weight, trip length, climate, access to home or workplace charging, and the density of public fast charging on your usual routes. With clear expectations and some planning, an EV can be a capable towing vehicle for many everyday needs.
