How to use climate control wisely to protect your EV range in hot and cold weather

Heating and cooling use more energy in an electric car than many new owners expect. The impact is most obvious in winter, but long, hot summers can reduce range too.

With a few simple habits, you can stay comfortable while keeping more kilometres in the battery. The aim is not to suffer in the cold or heat, but to let your car work smarter instead of harder.

Why climate control affects range so much

In a combustion car, cabin heat is mostly “free” waste heat from the engine. An EV has no hot engine, so it must create heat using the battery. That can take a noticeable share of available energy, especially on short trips.

Cooling is different but related. Air conditioning uses a compressor that can draw several hundred watts or more. At motorway speeds the effect on range is moderate, but at low speeds or in stop‑and‑go traffic it becomes more visible.

Precondition the cabin while plugged in

Most modern EVs let you warm up or cool down the cabin while the car is connected to a charger. Use the car’s app or built‑in timer to start climate control 10 to 30 minutes before you leave.

This does two useful things: the energy for heating or cooling mainly comes from the grid, not the battery, and the battery itself can reach a better temperature for performance and fast charging later on some models.

Use seat and steering wheel heating first

Heating the entire cabin uses far more energy than heating people directly. If your car has heated seats and a heated steering wheel, turn those on and set the main cabin temperature a bit lower.

Many drivers find that a cabin set to around 19–20 °C, combined with seat heating on a low or medium setting, feels cosy while using less energy than blasting warm air at 22–24 °C.

Manage airflow and temperature in winter

Automatic climate control is convenient, but you can often trim energy use by adjusting fan speed and temperature manually. Avoid the highest heat settings once the cabin is comfortable.

Use the front defog or defrost function only as long as needed to clear the glass, then switch back to normal airflow. Keeping air on the windscreen and side windows helps stop fogging without overheating the whole cabin.

Stay cool with less energy in summer

On hot days a parked car can quickly turn into an oven. Try to park in the shade or in covered parking where possible. A simple sunshade on the windscreen can also reduce the initial heat load.

When you return to the car, open doors or windows for a short time to let the hottest air escape before you turn on the air conditioning. After cooling starts, close the windows so the system does not have to battle a constant stream of hot outside air.

Use recirculation wisely

The recirculation button can help in both hot and cold weather, because the system reuses cabin air that is already closer to your target temperature. This means less energy spent heating or cooling fresh outside air.

However, avoid leaving recirculation on for very long periods with several people in the car, as windows may fog and air quality can drop. Switching between recirculated and fresh air every so often is a practical compromise.

Speed and route matter as much as climate settings

Climate control is only one piece of the range puzzle. Higher speeds, strong headwinds, heavy loads and hills can all reduce range more than heating or cooling alone.

If you are close to your destination and concerned about remaining range, reducing speed slightly often saves more energy than turning the climate system off and becoming uncomfortable or distracted.

Plan charging with weather in mind

Cold batteries accept charge more slowly, especially at high‑power DC chargers. If possible, time your fast charging stop towards the middle or end of a journey so the battery has warmed up while driving.

In hot weather, try not to arrive at a charger with a nearly empty battery after long, fast driving if you can avoid it. Taking a short break before a rapid charge, in a shaded area if available, can help moderate temperatures on some vehicles.

Simple habits that make a lasting difference

You do not need to think about climate settings every minute. The goal is to build a few small habits that become automatic: precondition while plugged in, favour seat heating in winter, reduce heat or AC once the cabin is comfortable, and park in shade when you can.

Combined, these steps can reclaim a meaningful amount of range over a season, reduce wear on climate components, and make your EV feel more predictable whatever the weather.
