Volkswagen unveils ID.Cross electric SUV with starting price below €28,000

Volkswagen has expanded its growing electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the new ID.Cross, a compact all-electric SUV designed to combine practicality, modern technology and an affordable starting price.

Positioned above the recently announced ID.Polo, the new model offers a more premium feel while remaining accessible to mainstream buyers.

Measuring 4,150 mm in length with a 2,601 mm wheelbase, the ID.Cross competes in the increasingly crowded compact electric SUV segment alongside rivals such as the Renault 4 E-Tech and Kia EV2.

Despite its compact dimensions, Volkswagen says the vehicle delivers a spacious cabin, complemented by a 475-liter luggage compartment and a 25-liter front trunk, a feature that remains uncommon in this class.

Buyers will be able to choose from three front-wheel-drive powertrain options. Entry-level models are equipped with a 37 kWh battery and either a 114 hp or 133 hp electric motor, while the flagship version pairs a larger 52 kWh battery with a 208 hp motor for stronger performance and extended driving range.

According to Volkswagen, the top-spec model can travel up to 436 km on a single charge under the WLTP testing cycle, while the base version offers a range of up to 316 km. DC fast charging is supported at up to 90 kW for models with the smaller battery, while the 52 kWh version can charge at speeds of up to 105 kW.

Both configurations are capable of recharging from 10% to 80% in approximately 24 minutes, and the vehicle also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for powering external devices.

Inside, the ID.Cross adopts a more refined design than many vehicles in its price segment. Cloth-covered dashboard surfaces, a generous number of physical controls and a standard 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen aim to strike a balance between digital features and ease of use.

Higher trim levels add a range of premium equipment, including matrix LED headlights, a panoramic glass roof, 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with massage functions, adaptive cruise control and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

Volkswagen says the entry-level ID.Cross, equipped with the 37 kWh battery and 114 hp motor, will start at around €28,000. The electric SUV is expected to arrive in European markets this autumn, giving buyers another affordable option as competition in the compact EV segment continues to intensify.
